John Friedlander, Senior Associate
A retired Navy Captain, John Friedlander consults in the areas of Information Technology (IT), Manpower & Personnel, Training, Program Management, and Strategic Planning. A motivational leader and team builder, he currently supports the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (Manpower, Personnel, Training, and Education) (OPNAV N1), Training and Education Branch. He has also supported the Command and Staff branch of the Commander, Naval Installations Command.
John began his naval career in Norfolk, Virginia. His first operational assignment was aboard the amphibious assault ship USS GUADALCANAL (LPH-7), where he qualified as a Surface Warfare Officer, initially serving as the Deck Division Officer and later as the Auxiliaries Officer. He then served on the guided missile destroyer USS RICHARD E. BYRD (DDG-23) as the Electronics Material Officer, where he supervised 18 Electronics Technicians. His follow-on active duty shore assignments include a variety of instructional and training management leadership positions. Specifically, John served as an Instructor at Officer Candidate School, Instructor Training School, and Officer Indoctrination School and as Director, International Officer Candidate School; Director Instructor Training School; and Deputy Director for Training at Naval Education and Training Center, Newport RI.
John also has significant industry and higher education experience. In addition to being the Manager of Training and Curriculum Development for the National Elevator Industry Educational Program, he served as the IT Training Coordinator at Brown University, where he developed, taught, and managed an extensive variety of computer training courses for staff, students, and faculty.
Johnís reserve staff assignments include Navy Reserve Headquarters in New Orleans, LA; Navy Personnel Command in Millington, TN; and the Office of the Chief of Naval Personnel in Washington, DC, where John served as a key member of the Future Pay and Personnel Solution/Defense Integrated Military Human Resources System team for the OPNAV N1 Chief Information Officer.
During his thirty year naval career, John was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, and various Sea Service awards.
John received his BA in Government from Cornell University, a Masterís Degree in Adult Education from the University of Rhode Island, and a second Masterís Degree in Public Administration from Troy University in Alabama.
